summary: This layer represents the Total Emissions recorded in Abu Dhabi Emirate for the year 2022. Emissions were allocated to a standardised 1km by 1km grid across Abu Dhabi.
accessInformation: Created by Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi. Emissions data and spatial data underlying the maps were calculated using data from a variety of sources, but primarily from Abu Dhabi government ministries (Departments of energy, Department of economic development, Department of agriculture and food safety, Abu Dhabi Statistics Centre – SCAD, and others) and specifically designed questionnaires sent to key energy, transport and industrial operators

Emissions were allocated to a standardised 1km by 1km grid across Abu Dhabi. This allows aggregation of emissions across sectors to give total emissions per grid cell. The emissions assigned to each grid cell represent the sum of the emissions from the points, lines or polygons falling within that grid cell. For line and polygon sources, where the line or polygon is shared across 2 or more grid cells, each grid cell is assigned a share of the emissions from the source feature corresponding to the proportion of the length/area of the line/polygon falling in each grid cell.

licenseInfo:

The emissions maps were created to provide a spatial disaggregation of the Emirate-level emissions estimated in the Abu Dhabi Emissions Inventory 2022. Emissions were mapped using a variety of approaches, unique to each sector. “Bottom-up” methods were used for some sectors, where emissions were estimated for individual spatial entities then aggregated to give Emirate level emissions estimates. For other sectors, “Top-down” methods were used where Emirate level emissions were disaggregated spatially using a particular spatial proxy and assumptions. In either case, the total emissions present in the maps were constrained (as far as possible) to match the Emirate level emission totals.

In the “bottom-up” case the accuracy of the maps is limited by the accuracy and completeness of the data collected from individual industrial facilities, for example. In the “top-down” case, the accuracy is limited by how closely the proxies and assumptions used to disaggregate emissions reflects the true distribution. It is hoped that the maps reasonably reflect the large-scale distribution of emissions – on average – across the emirate. However, it is likely that for any individual grid cell, emissions calculated with the benefit of additional knowledge about sources within the grid cell (e.g. knowledge of the actual number of livestock on individual farms), will differ from the mapped value.

Therefore, these datasets are best-suited to regional- and national-scale air quality modelling, rather than very fine-grained local-scale modelling.
