Gargoor is a dome shaped fish trap made of metal mesh wire with a funnel shaped entrance allowing easy access for fish at the front, and an escape panel allowing undersized fish to escape at the back. The Gargoor is baited with bread and dried sardine and placed on the sea bottom for 1-2 weeks. In 2003, fisheries management regulations were imposed that excluded tarad fishermen from operating gargoors, and allowed fishermen on lansh boats to operate a maximum of only 125 gargoors per boat in Abu Dhabi Emirate. Data originates from Abu Dhabi commercial fisheries statistics stored in the National Fisheries Information System (NFIS), 2010-2012. Enumerators interview fishermen on their fishing trip whereabouts, utilizing a marine grid with spatial units measuring approx. 18 by 18 km. This allowed to pinpoint the actual fishing grounds for the Gargoor fishing gear more accurately. The resulting spatial distribution polygon was inferred by Inverse Distance Weighting tool (IDW), classified to eight Jenks natural break classes, excluding fishing intensity values below 0.05. The total sample size was 4,912 records obtained from Delma, Al Sadar and Free Port landing sites. </SPAN></SPAN></P><P><SPAN /></P></DIV></DIV></DIV> |
